Making unified DeFi liquidity usable without needing a PhD in blockchain.

Business Challenge

Most DeFi platforms rely on separate liquidity pools for each trading pair, which fragments liquidity and makes capital efficiency… not great. HydraDX introduced the Omnipool: a single, unified liquidity pool for all assets. Technically brilliant, but the UX problem was obvious — if you can’t explain it simply, nobody’s going to trust it with real money.

The challenge was to design an interface and mental model that made the Omnipool feel understandable, transparent, and trustworthy for both experienced DeFi users and curious newcomers.

Approach

I started by talking directly to the people who actually live in these systems:

• DeFi traders
• Liquidity providers (LPs)
• And a few “I’ve used MetaMask twice and I’m scared” types

From these interviews, I mapped out:

• Their mental models of AMMs and pools
• Why they felt existing DeFi UIs were confusing or risky
• What information they needed to feel “in control”

From there, I designed:

• High-fidelity user flows for adding/removing liquidity, swapping assets, and understanding risk
• Visual explanations of how a single unified pool behaves vs. traditional pair-based pools
• Clear hierarchies and affordances so users always know: where their money is, what it’s doing, and what could go wrong

I worked closely with blockchain developers (who speak a completely different dialect of reality) to balance protocol constraints with UX clarity, ensuring we didn’t oversimplify to the point of being misleading.

Outcome

The result was a next-gen DeFi interface that:

• Makes the Omnipool concept feel approachable instead of intimidating
• Helps users understand how their liquidity participates in the system
• Reduces the cognitive load of managing multiple pools and pairs

HydraDX was able to position the Omnipool as something more than a whitepaper idea: a live, usable product that doesn’t require being Vitalik to navigate.
